[SEED] 5 Essay Mistakes That Hurt Your College Application

Your Essay Matters More Than You Think
The personal essay is often the tipping point in competitive admissions decisions. Avoid these five common mistakes.
1. Writing What You Think They Want to Hear
Admissions officers read thousands of essays. They can spot inauthenticity instantly. Write about what genuinely matters to you.
2. Summarizing Your Resume
Your activities list already covers your accomplishments. The essay should reveal your personality, values, and thought process.
3. Using Clichés
"I learned that hard work pays off" or "This experience changed my life" — these phrases signal lazy writing. Be specific and original.
4. Trying to Sound Too Sophisticated
Using a thesaurus to replace every word doesn't impress anyone. Write in your natural voice. The best essays sound like a smart 17-year-old, not a philosophy professor.
5. Not Getting Feedback
Every writer needs an editor. Have a teacher, counselor, or mentor review your essay before submitting.
The strongest essays are vulnerable, specific, and authentic. They make the reader feel like they've met you.
